On this day, October 23, 1966, the Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded their first single, Hey Joe, at De Lane Lea Studios in London. Chas Chandler, who used to play bass with the Animals, offered to manage Jimi after being blown away by his guitar virtuosity. Hendrix had been a sideman for Little Richard, King Curtis, and the Isley Brothers among others. Chandler hooked him up with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell and off to the studio they went. Hendrix and Chandler had seen Tim Rose perform Hey Joe in Greenwich Village and knew they had to record it. The song's authorship is credited to Billy Roberts but it is highly derivative of many Blues standards. Jimi's instincts were right on the money. Hey Joe was the first recorded song anyone ever heard Jimi's voice on, and its impact was tremendous. The song has been recorded by a wide range of artists including The Leaves, Love, The Byrds, Deep Purple, Cher, The Surfaris, Wilson Pickett, and The Standells.
